The purpose of this blog is to record progress on DAB310 Project 1, The Architectural Apprenticeship. This project is based on three key architectural concepts - a house is an environmental filter, a container for human activity and a delightful experience. These three concepts will be explored through Archetype, Analysis and Application tasks.

Please follow the links above to view each section of the project.

Part A - Archetype Research

This section of the project required research to be undertaken on 1 international building and 2 Australian buildings from within the provided list. The chosen buildings:
  • Isaacson-Davis Beach House - Balnarring, Victoria, Australia - John Wardle Architects
  • Blades Residence - Santa Barbara, California, USA - Morphosis Architecture
  • Sunrise Beach House - Sunshine Coast, Queensland, Australia - Wilson Architects
These three buildings were researched in accordance with the project's key themes of :
  • A house is an environmental filter
  • A house is a container for human activities
  • A house is a delightful experience

Isaacson-Davis Beach House:

Architect: John Wardle Architects

Location: Balnarring, Victoria, Australia

Date of Completion: 1997

Awards: Victorian Architecture Medal for Best Building of the Year, RAIA Harold Desbrowe-Annear Award for Residential Architecture

Architect's Statement:

'A retreat in the sea-side environs of Balnarring, the house operates as a weekender. Like a suitcase, it is unpacked on arrival and then repacked on depature. The planning reflects the clients' pattern of living, the bedroom provides the first glimpses of the rising sun, the kitchen and dining areas face the northern garden aspect and the living room heralds the evening by addressing the setting sun'

 RAIA Awards Statement:

'As the winner of the Victorian Architecture Medal, this house is a reminder that great architecture is not dependant on either size or budget, and that often it is the most apparently simple works which are the most profound'
