The purpose of this blog is to record progress on DAB310 Project 1, The Architectural Apprenticeship. This project is based on three key architectural concepts - a house is an environmental filter, a container for human activity and a delightful experience. These three concepts will be explored through Archetype, Analysis and Application tasks.

Please follow the links above to view each section of the project.

Part B - Analysis of Archetype

After researching 3 buildings in Part 1 (Archetype research), we were required to choose one of these buildings for further research, analysis and representation. The main focus of this task was the recreation of drawings for the building based on the graphic drawing style of the original design architect.

The house chosen for further study was Sunrise Beach House by Wilson Architects. This house was chosen due to:
  • The integration of architecture and landscape architecture
  • Aesthetically pleasing and interesting design
  • Availability of reliable information

Written Description:

The following description of the Sunrise Beach House is centred on the 3 fundamental concepts of the project - the house is an environmental filter, a container for human activities and a delightful experience.

A House is an Environmental Filter:
Typically, beach houses hug the eastern boundary trying to maximise ocean view. The Sunrise Beach House however is not preoccupied with this thought. Offsetting the building from the ocean allows extra connections to be made with the sand and beach vegetation. The U shaped form acts as a windbreak from harsh Western winds and keeps the openings to the North East. Extensive use of crafted wicker screens helps to filter the ocean breezes. Local resources were used to fulfill the building's material pallette of raw concrete, glass, zinc and timber. These materials were inspired through the immediate surroundings of caked sand, native pandanus and water. The integration of landscape architecture was done carefull to respect the restricted list of beachfront plants allowed in the wider Noosa community. The pandanus palm was identified as the signature tree. The design was also considerate of natural light, heating and cooling methods.

A House is a Container of Human Activities:
The main focus of this design was the landscape with the building being a well crafted place to simply dwell within it. The U shaped boundary helps to protect the site from the busy David Low Way and creates a sense of calm. Public and private zoning is blurred due to the blending of the house with the beach providing flexible living spaces both inside and out. The building form also creates a sense of protection for internal domesticity within the aggressive external environment. The interior design was sensitively restrained to focus on the relationship with the landscape. The approach to pool saftey was done to minimise visual impediments. The result was the use of a ha-ha (sunken wall) as a barrier.

A House is a Delighful Experience:
In all beach houses, the connectedness to the ocean is crucial. To allow this within the Sunrise Beach House, extensive openings are used to create a sequence of shifting view and ocean vignettes. This creates a sense of being open to the elements, however, it still provides suficient shelter and privacy for occupant comfort. The main journey through the building leads from one human scaled space to another until you are engulfed by the view. Patterns of shadow and raking light is created through the house and the house works cleverly with aspects such as hard and soft and cool and warm to create effective sensory responses.

Further email contact was made in reference to the possibility of acquiring any hand drawings and sketches, however, no hand drawings were available within their images archive. Due to this, the previous images were used as the basis for the recreated drawings. The provided images are computer generated, therefore they use clean linework. However, some distinction is made between materials and depth of field by shading and use of different colouring. These principles will be used for the recreated drawings.
